After attacking a ship in the Strait of Hormuz for not using the designated route, Iran on Friday said that transit through the waterway will not be unconditional.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that safe passage through the strait “cannot be guaranteed through ambiguous arrangements, parallel routes, or decision-making outside Iran’s considerations as a coastal state”.
Gharibabadi said that any transit through the strait would be governed by Article Five of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU), which states that Iran will define the terms of safe passage through the waterway. He said that any ship failing to comply with these conditions would forfeit its right to safe passage.
