Russia’s reported use of the hypersonic Oreshnik missile against Ukraine marks a dangerous escalation in Moscow’s signaling strategy.
The strike came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of an imminent large-scale attack, with Kyiv again rocked by explosions. The Financial Times reported the strike as part of Russia’s intensified campaign against Ukraine’s capital and strategic infrastructure.
The military effect matters, but the political message matters more. Hypersonic weapons are used to communicate capability, reach and escalation dominance. Moscow wants Kyiv to understand that Russia can still intensify. More importantly, it wants Europe to understand that deeper involvement in Ukraine carries higher risks.
This is why the Oreshnik strike should be read as a signal to Brussels, Warsaw, Berlin and Paris.
Russia is trying to shape European psychology. It wants to raise the perceived cost of support for Ukraine, especially as EU financing and weapons deliveries become longer-term commitments rather than emergency measures.
The war is therefore entering a more dangerous phase because Moscow is pairing battlefield pressure with strategic intimidation.
